Discovery Road Project Update
We have been receiving several questions regarding our road project and its current status. The following is a brief history of the road proposal and its current status:Discovery Ski Area had proposed to construct a road to county specifications (entirely funded by private parties) connecting the Rumsey road from Philipsburg to a new base area located near a long abandoned mining camp called Summer Camp. This road would have been less than three quarters of a mile and the route of this road was to go through a portion of land administered by The Bureau of Land Management. (BLM) Because a right of way was required from the BLM, a special use permit was applied for by Granite County. Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks and the Anaconda Sportsmen’s Club voiced opposition to this permit based due concerns that it would be detrimental to the Elk and Deer.
Discovery Ski Area has built a triple chairlift and some ski trails so that there is access to the ski area from the Summer Camp base area.
At this point, Discovery Ski Area has asked that Granite County withdraw their request for a special use permit and Discovery is currently reviewing all their options. There are several possible routes through private land but these are not being pursued at this time.
Discovery Ski Area has built a triple chairlift and some ski trails so that there is access to the ski area from the Summer Camp base area. Some residents and people who own property in Summer Gulch have access to the Summer Camp base area and they also have access to Rumsey road but as of now, there is no public access to the Summer Camp base area.
Discovery Ski Area will continue to work on the ski trails and the infrastructure of the Summer Camp base area and will pursue a public access road when opportunities become available.
We would like to thank everyone who has offered their support and we hope to have workable solution soon.
